The early stages of the pandemic in 2020 forced organizations in the global economy to demonstrate agility in how they operated due to the contact restrictions needed to stem the spread of the virus throughout the general population. Some companies demonstrated the agility to quickly adapt to the business environment at that time. Others moved more slowly and suffered due to loss of profitability, capital, staff and other precious resources.
An organization’s agility is the capability to collectively think and understand as a group then quickly adapt to the changing circumstances facing it. Developing this capability as an organization is far more complex than building the skills of individuals. The organization must be able to solve complex problems across numerous customer contact points in an altering environment.
At CRG, our experiences have shown teamwork is a prerequisite to agility. Individuals must be able to work as a team across organization boundaries to solve complex problems. This requires the collective demonstration of problem solving, communication and sharing information capabilities for agility to manifest in the company.
During the pandemic, many restaurants redesigned processes and reallocated resources to focus on delivery of meals versus service onsite. Larger fast-food chains had to change processes for service only at the drive thru window. Corporations with sizeable onsite staff had to embrace remote work.
The key point, organizations demonstrated agility by recognizing a turning point in their markets and making a shift in capabilities to meet the demand. The same cannot be said for a company like Blockbuster that refused to deal with Netflix.
